Responsibility is the key

Champion operates under a model that is an integral part of our Culture. The model was first designed one afternoon at a Strategic Coach™ seminar, when a workshop mate of mine stopped the conversation and said, “Ricky, I think I know what your problem is.” At that point in time I did not know I had a problem. However, as he explained his thoughts, it occurred to me that we had not yet developed a written diagrammatic model of the underlying culture for Champion.
In developing the model, it was important to assure that everyone inside Champion was able to make the very best decisions they could, with the very best information available. Before executing decisions we have always come back and asked the question “what else can be done to improve the situation?”; and “what else do our Tenants want to know that better ensures their success?” If the outcome was not as good as we would have liked, we agree that everyone had “permission to seek forgiveness”.
Soon after creating our model, I found myself talking to a group of nurses at a local hospital and being asked how our model operated. When I got to the that we give permission to seek forgiveness, it became clear that would not work in a medical setting. To allow the concept to work in their field, I replaced “permission to seek forgiveness” with “permission to do the right thing”. The key to this entire concept is that everyone needs to take responsibility.
Responsibility is the key. We are responsible for the well being of our friends. As an employer I am responsible for the well being and advancement of our staff, our tenants and our consultants. Our staff, our tenants and our consultants are responsible to assure not only their own well being, but also Champion’s well being. In essence, we are responsible for each other.
Champion’s current model now says “taking responsibility with authority to do the right thing”.
